Program Overview

The Medical and Hospital Careers ROP course is a full year course (two semesters) designed to expose high school students to a variety of health occupations and to prepare them for foundational roles in the healthcare workforce.

Students will gain basic healthcare knowledge and skills through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on learning experiences, culminating in 9 Butte College Credits and your CPR Certification. This program is an excellent first step for students considering careers in medicine, nursing, allied health, and other hospital roles.

Program Schedule and Location

Program takes place over one full school year (2 semesters).

​Class Times (2026-2027):
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:30 PM–3:30 PM

Fall Semester Schedule:
  • ​Classroom Instruction
  • Students meet in the classroom 3 hours per day on Tuesdays and Thursdays
Spring Semester Schedule:
  • Half-Time Instruction & Community Classroom
  • Students meet in the classroom only once per week and participate in job shadowing at local hospitals/medical facilities once per week

Program Objectives

Upon successful completion of the Medical Careers ROP course, students will be able to:
  • Identify the scope and roles of a variety of medical and hospital occupations.
  • Demonstrate fundamental basic knowledge and skills required for entry-level healthcare settings.
  • Utilize hands-on learning experiences to apply classroom theory in professional environments.
  • Understand the professional standards, ethics, and communication skills necessary for success in the healthcare field.
