The community classroom experience allows students to gain first-hand experience in a clinical setting while being supported by an industry professional. These unpaid on-the job training experiences help students to further develop the skills and knowledge necessary to acquire entry-level employment. During this experience our instructors regularly check-in with the students at their placement sites, and visit with the site supervisor to ensure that students are progressing in their skills development and provide support as needed. Three Year Strategic Map and Three Year Investment Map The CTE Team has completed the thoughtful process of identifying our key outcomes for the next three years. As the leader of the department, I am extremely grateful for the Team's contributions, questions and willingness to explore uncomfortable topics to adequately address the needs of our community and students. - Jennifer Foglesong, Senior Director Apprenticeship: Dental Assistants The CTE department applied for and was awarded the California Apprenticeship Innovation grant for one year. The planning grant allows for the team to outline the program, apply for a State approved Apprenticeship, and start recruiting students. We are excited to offer an alternative path to students wanting to enter the Dental field. Integrated Curriculum Workshop with Inspire Butte County CTE is in the midst of leading the incredible teachers of Inspire through a Curriculum Development Institute Series focused on the collaboration, planning and developing of cross-curricular, interdisciplinary integrated projects. In our final session in April, teams of teachers will present their completed Integrated Projects to the rest of their staff with the intention of utilizing this cross-curricular integration to support high-impact student learning. Educating for Careers Conference Amanda Samons, Kelli Gordon and MaryRose Lovgren presented as a team this year for two workshops: “Ace your Advisory Committee Meetings,” and “Build Your CTE Pipeline by Creating Middle School Careers Camps!” We shared with full-capacity audiences our collective knowledge on developing and hosting a CTE Advisory Committee, including real-life examples of how a strong committee can support your program in authentic ways; and our success with Middle School CTE Careers Camps as an ideal way to introduce students to local high school CTE Pathways and help them start building skills. CTE at CUE (Computer Using Educators) Conference At the CUE conference, Kelli Gordon participated in a panel presentation regarding CTE and eSports. The panel included the NASEF Middle School eSports Commissioner, CDW Education, Achieve Charter Schools and Los Angeles Unified School District. The panel discussed the social emotional benefits of eSports as well as various methods for raising student engagement by connecting eSports to other subjects. Kelli provided clarity regarding what CTE is and how it works, leading to many questions from the audience both during and after the presentation. Several audience members expressed that they had attended the presentation primarily to learn more about CTE, and according to two different participants, it was the “most helpful” presentation they had attended during the conference. This encourages the CTE department to seek further opportunities to spread the word about the impact and benefits of CTE at events that are outside of the CTE environment to reach a broader audience. Dream Equity Spring Counselor Conference Jennifer Foglesong and Kelli Gordon attended the conference put on by the Sacramento County Office of Education to learn more about how we can support our local school counselors, especially connected to Career Technical Education. The impactful keynote speakers included Mark C Perna, bestselling author of “Answering Why: Unleashing Passion, Purpose and Productivity in Younger Generations,” a novel the department recently read during a professional book study. Breakout sessions attended included New to the Counseling Game, Career Education at the Community College, CTE- Why Career Technical Education?, Building Blocks: Best Practices of Working With and Supporting Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Young People, Advancing Equity through Dual Enrollment at Sacramento City Colleges, and Knowing Your Strengths Builds Success in Your Work.
